Implementing bushfire prevention measures is crucial for us to protect lives, property, and the environment. Here are some essential steps we can take
Bushfire Prevention Guidelines
Everyone staying or helping at Berry Springs Farmstay plays an important role in keeping the property safe from bushfires.
Those who are new to the farm often begin by assisting with daily bushfire prevention cleanups to protect our animals, gardens, and buildings.
Clear Vegetation Around Buildings
Create a safety buffer zone by removing dry grass, leaves, and flammable materials at least 30 metres (100 feet) from all structures.
Maintain Defensible Space
Regularly trim trees and shrubs to create a defensible space around the house and sheds.
Keep grass and weeds short and remove overhanging branches.
Remove Dead or Dry Vegetation
Collect and remove dead plants, fallen branches, leaves, and debris often.
This helps reduce the amount of fuel available for fires.
✂️ Prune Trees and Shrubs
Prune tree branches up to 2 metres (6 feet) from the ground.
Trim back any branches touching roofs or hanging over structures to prevent flames from spreading.
Watering & Irrigation
Regularly water lawns, gardens, and plant areas to keep vegetation healthy and less flammable.
Keep Gutters Clean
Clean gutters frequently to remove dry leaves and sticks that could ignite from flying embers.
Secure Flammable Materials
Store firewood, gas bottles, and other flammable items away from buildings and dry vegetation, in the designated safe areas.
Maintain Firebreaks
Help maintain firebreaks or bare soil barriers using gravel, sand, or concrete to slow down or stop fire spread.
Keep Access Roads Clear
Ensure all access roads and driveways remain clear for emergency vehicles.
Trim vegetation and remove anything that could block safe entry or evacuation.
Ember Safety
Where possible, use or help maintain ember-resistant vents and mesh screens to prevent embers from entering buildings.
Emergency Awareness
Familiarise yourself with the bushfire emergency plan, including escape routes and communication steps.
Keep this information accessible and discuss it with others on the property.
Stay Alert
Stay informed about fire danger ratings, weather warnings, and local alerts from Northern Territory fire authorities.
Report Concerns
Immediately report unattended fires, smoke, or suspicious activity to local authorities or the property coordinator.
Early reporting can save lives and prevent disaster.
Working Together for Safety
By following these steps, everyone helps protect Berry Springs Farmstay, its people, animals, and the surrounding bushland.
Together we create a safe, resilient, and well-prepared environment for all who live and visit here.
