Implementing bushfire prevention measures is crucial for us to protect lives, property, and the environment. Here are some essential steps we can take
Bushfire Prevention Guidelines
All caretakers play an important role in keeping Berry Springs Farmstay safe from bushfires.
Short-term helpers usually begin their stay by assisting with our daily bushfire prevention cleanups.
Working together helps protect the property, the animals, and everyone living here.
Clear Vegetation Around Buildings
Create a safety buffer zone by clearing dry grass, leaves, and flammable materials at least 30 metres (100 feet) from all structures.
Maintain Defensible Space
Regularly trim trees and shrubs to create a defensible space around the house and sheds.
Keep grass and weeds short and remove overhanging branches.
Remove Dead or Dry Vegetation
Collect and remove dead plants, fallen branches, leaves, and debris frequently.
These materials act as fuel for fires and must be cleared to reduce risk.
✂️ Prune Trees and Shrubs
Prune tree branches up to 2 metres (6 feet) from the ground.
Trim back any branches hanging over roofs or touching structures to prevent fire spread.
Watering & Irrigation
Regularly water lawns, plants, and green areas to keep vegetation healthy and less flammable.
Keep Gutters Clean
Clean gutters frequently to remove dry leaves, sticks, and debris that could ignite from flying embers.
Secure Flammable Materials
Store firewood, gas bottles, propane tanks, and other flammable items well away from buildings and vegetation, in the designated fire-safe areas.
Install Firebreaks
Help maintain firebreaks or fire-resistant zones using gravel, sand, concrete, or bare soil.
These barriers help slow or stop the spread of fire.
Maintain Access Roads
Keep all driveways and access roads clear for emergency vehicles.
Trim vegetation and remove any obstacles that could block safe entry or exit.
Install Ember-Resistant Vents
Where possible, install ember-resistant vents on structures to prevent embers from entering and igniting materials inside buildings.
Prepare an Emergency Plan
Know the bushfire emergency plan — including evacuation routes and communication procedures — and review it regularly.
Stay Informed
Stay updated on fire danger ratings, weather conditions, and local bushfire warnings issued by the NT authorities.
Report Suspicious Activity
If you see unattended fires or suspicious behaviour, report it immediately to local authorities.
Quick action can prevent disaster.
Working Together for Safety
By staying proactive and following these steps, we can all reduce bushfire risks and protect our animals, property, and community.
Your cooperation keeps Berry Springs Farmstay a safe and resilient place for everyone.
